Our WI is 99 … and Still Counting

Did you know that Ruddington Women’s Institute has been active in our village for ninety-nine years?

Ahead of their centenary celebrations, current members are extending a warm welcome to any woman to join them, regardless of age. They’re also keen to dispel some common misconceptions.

Committee member Barbara Wheeler says: “Contrary to popular belief, the WI is not all about baking and jam making! Some of us enjoy doing that, but others like to go on visits in the local area, join in the various activities at our meetings or listen to interesting speakers. So far this year we’ve tasted local gin, had a ‘virtual’ tour of Iceland, learnt about ‘wet felting’ and eaten local cheeses.”

Ruddington WI meets at 7.15pm on the second Wednesday of the month in St Peter’s Rooms. In the next few months they’ll be having a talk about toilets, a Tai Chi session, and a stall at the Village Christmas Market. Then, to kick start their centenary celebrations in 2024, they’ll be making (and tasting!) chocolates.

“You could have lived around here for ages, or only a few months, but if you’re looking for friendship, links to other things going on locally or want to try something new, you’ll definitely find those through Ruddington WI” says Barbara.

Member Annie agrees: “ As soon as I stopped working away I wanted to meet new people so I joined Ruddington WI. I don’t bake and am not particularly crafty but the WI is so much more. I’ve made lovely friends, got more involved in the community and learned new skills. Our meetings are a highlight of my month”

Visitors are welcome and asked for a small contribution to cover refreshments, usually £4.

Ruddington WI’s next meeting is an Indian Music Workshop on Wednesday 11th October 2023 at 7.15am.  Barbara adds: “Please come along and be part of the next ninety-nine years!”
